Reviews

Oklahoma

Well, again this bloc production was very good.A bright and colourful set with easy changes of scenery. The story pretty much followed the film and included the original songs such as Oh, what a beautiful mornin' and I'm just a girl who cant say no. The chemistry, however between the two main characters seemed to be missing, while supporting characters Will and Ado Annie had chemistry in abundance.Excellent performances by Tamar Hankinson and Michael Griffiths. An excellent performance also by Simon M Gregory as baddie Jud Fry.If you can manage to sit through a very long first act this is well worth a watch.    Rating 5/10

Wozzeck - Potentially a brave decision for the WNO as this opera would not be everybody's cup of tea! However, so far as i could see, the house was full, and if those sitting near me were anything to go by, the audience was extremely enthusiastic in its response to this production of Berg's unusual and sombre piece. As usual the performances were impeccable and, despite the miseries of the story line, some humour even was wrung from the dialogue. The star performance had to be Wozzeck's and Mrie's very young child, who graced the stage in several of the scenes and played his part to perfection. The orchestra deserved boquets for their accomplished performance of what must be a fiendishly difficult score and the conductor held the whole performance together magnificently.

Madame Butterfly- Review

Every note was perfect, every instrument in tune and every singer reaching the high notes. This was certainly brilliantly staged although this didn’t make up for a long and sometimes boring performance. It often lacked excitement and energy. The musical score was amazing and the massive orchestra was faultless. Powerful, big and in parts breathtaking. This night out will stay in your mind. An amazing show but unfortunately the plot was slow and uneventful until the very end. A great evening if your passionate about opera but beware it can lack pace. 7/10

La Traviata -

grand opera indeed, as only Verdi can produce it! The Welsh National Opera's new production of this classic, is a worthy addition to its repertoire. A haunting and touching tale of self-sacrifice and misplaced family loyalties, it naturally all ends in tears, but not before some quite subtle human dilemmas ans interpersonal conflicts have been explored. The Bristol production was graced by the presence of Katio Pellegrino, making her debut in the lead role of Violetta. There were moments when one felt the difficulty of a new member of the cast joining a well formed team, but the beauty and range of Pellegrino's soprano voice overcame any momentary awkwardness as she proved herself to be more than able to meet the challenges of this demanding part. Equally splendid performances were given by Alfie Boe as Violetta's lover Alfredo and Dario Solari as Alfredo's father Germont. But it was perhaps the staging and scene changes that, for me at least, set this production apart as somthing quite special.

WE  WILL ROCK YOU

Well, an amazing show from start to finish. From 6 to 60 year olds, this show will keep you bopping in your seat. Although the story was weak and hard to follow, the music and the great cast made up for it and when the legend that is Brian May came on stage the crowd erupted and anyone who wasn't standing beforehand leapt to their feet as he played to a couple of songs. It was by far one of the best shows I've seen this year!

Annie

A happy and cheerful musical that brought lots of laughter and fun. Sue Pollard was part of an amazing cast that injected so much fun and enthusiasm into the performance. The sets were fabulous and brought you back to New York in the 1930’s.  Annie and her lovely dog made everybody in the audience smile from ear to ear. Everything was perfect from the singing to the band – I really couldn’t fault it. 10/10
